1. Think up a title that will grab the attention. There are a number of key words that are known to create a response in human beings. Some of them provoke an emotional response and others appeal to the intellect. You need to learn those words and cultivate the habit of using them in both the title and body of your articles.

2. Present useful information in a straightforward manner. Don’t use long words when short ones are available to say the same thing. People who seek information online are not all college professors and there will be many people for whom English is not their first language. You want your articles to be accessible to as many people as possible, so keep the language simple.

3. Don’t make your article too long. People reading online prefer to have information presented in easily digestible morsels rather than great big chunks. Make sure your writing is “tight”, every word should count. When you edit, cut out unnecessary adjectives and tidy up any phrases that appear overly wordy.

4. Break your online articles into shorter paragraphs than you would use offline. Reading on a computer screen is harder on the eyes than reading a book. Also internet users are usually in a hurry to get the information they want. Using sub headings, bullet points and lists are all good ways to make reading onscreen easier.

5. Use your keywords or key phrases sparingly throughout your articles. The golden rule is to use keywords so that they sound natural. If you overdo the keywords your article will not be enjoyable to read and people won’t be bothered to try, it is too easy online to click away in search of something more user friendly.
